Today I bagged two 14ers!!
What does that mean you may ask?
It means I made it to the summit of two 14,000+ foot peaks.
In Colorado.
Gray’s Peak and Torrey’s Peak.
14272 and 14275 (plus minus depending on where you find the number).
It was really really hard.
Going to elevation from areas at about sea level is hard. And can sometimes be dangerous.
Thankfully as a wilderness first responder I know what to look for and what treatment options there are.
I landed in Denver on Tuesday and drove up to Mt Evans – I thought I’d be able to drive to 14,000 feet but they closed that road the day I got there.
Which means I only got up to 12,800.
But I got my body to start acclimating to the altitude.
I slept in the mountains at 8500 feet, also to help my body acclimate as quickly as possible.
It was INCREDIBLY hard.
I wanted to turn back many times.
I could only do 200-400 feet of walking before having to stop to catch my breath.
Due to the thin air up there.
I kept checking in with myself to see how I was doing to make sure I was safe.
I told myself I would do only one of the peaks because the climb was messing me up so badly.
But I decided to do the second, and wow am I glad I did!!!!
Incredibly hard.
Every step at the end hurts.
But I clocked 8.7 miles with 3600 feet of elevation gain.
And my Fitbit is sitting at 24,000 steps 😎
(Which is not even my record).
Wow was it awesome!!!
